Boston Mycological Club
The name refers to the short stem on the Russula. The cap is white and funnel-shaped. Usually a somewhat large mushroom, it can be seen pushing up the forest duff as the cap lifts. The gills are relatively narrow and close spaced. The faint blue-green tint to the gills and often a blue-green color around the stem just where it meets the gills is the looked for trait of this mushroom. This can easily look like a Lactarius, but there is no latex when cut.
