This could be confused with Clavulinopsis fusiformis, as it might be thought of as an envrionmentally distorted version of that mushroom. But there is a basic difference between the two, Neolecta is an ascomycete, Clavulinopsis is a basidiomycete. Microscopically, it would be much harder to confuse the two. The lumpy and distorted shapes of Neolecta irregularis are typical of its shape, as is the terrestrial habitat in woods and the August to October season of fruiting.
