Gyroporus castaneus (Bull. ex Fr.) Quel.

Other names:

Chestnut bolete

Description:

Chestnut (light brownish-orange) colored cap, with similar colors on the stem, maybe a shade browner. The pores, when young, are so pale as to almost white, but age to yellow/olive colors. The cap is dry and smooth. The stem is usually known for being hollow or stuffed, and can be gently squeezed between the fingers and felt to spring back. The stem, while smooth on the surface, usually has a lumpy appearance. Generally it is a smallish mushroom, 3" - 4" tall, but has been collected in larger sizes occasionally. It is not known for bruising at all readily.
