Ganoderma applanatum (Persoon) Patouillard

Other names:

Artist's Conk

Description:

A classic fungus to find, indeed. It is known for the bruising the pore surface does when fresh and carefully scratched. It's sort of like drawing in ink - there's no way to erase. If it's to be used for drawing on, it must be pretty fresh, as it seems to dry out and become un-bruisable in a day. They are perennial fungi, they grow a new layer of tubes and get larger every year, so if you're not going to use it, consider leaving it on the tree to continue growing.
